First century governing body?
by lostsheep82 inmy anointed step dad always mentions about how the first century christians had a governing body also.
where in the bible does it actually say that?
to me governing body is just a dictatorship of men who think they are right and can control, no different than the governments....governing body set rules, and ultimately decide your future as far as i'm concerned.

So sorry for your loss and for your childrens loss....it is understandable that you have such mixed feelings.
I have a garden were I have planted some lovely flower, rose bushes....these I view as my relatives...the birds that visit also. I find it soothing and makes me happy to think of them.
Much love

What is the WTS financial position?
by Roddy ini know this may seen an obvious question but i'm wondering if their downward financial situation is accelerating in the last five years.. we know of the large real estate sell-offs in brooklyn and their large bethel layoffs -- things they never report on in their publications.
pushing more and more of the traveling overseer expenses to the local circuit and congregations.
how they have taken a lot of shortcuts with regards their printing operations.

That is an interesting point relating to the so called donation of literature to Africa. The witnesses still charge for their placements of literature in Africa, so they are getting the money back maybe threefold. The local brothers probably also are told to donate for the literature before they go out and place it.
I remember questioning the whole "free literature" set up in the US and Europe...didnt the poor people in third world countries need it the most to be free? I was told they would not appreciate the literature if they got it free! That is such a joke, I see the magazines chucked in the bin and on the floor so often after the dubs have been out giving the magazines away! The whole donation set up was a tax scam and never understood by the rank and file.

Who was the first person to become a Jehovah's Witness in your family?
by RULES & REGULATIONS inmy mom, dad, uncles, aunts, and grandparents were all raised catholic.
they were all baptised and married in the catholic church.. one day in the early 1960's,a witness preached to my uncle.
he started a bible study and later had his immediate family join in.

This is an interesting thread. I have my theories on why some people are so attracted to the witnesses. In our family it was my parents that studied in early 60s, they got baptized without any questions, my father never really fit in, he was too dominant and aggressive. My mother was c of e, disappointed because the vicar refused to christen me, I was adopted. Anyway my family were disfunctional and whatever we did would always be extreme. They all left the organization in the 70s....I was well and truly in by then as the witnesses had become my family, I was only 14, terrified of the big A and craving acceptance and approval.
I remember being told that Jehovah chooses those he wants to be his servants, I couldnt understand what went wrong in our family, he got it wrong I was sure. Yet when I met good people outside I kept thinking how come God wants my weird family and not them? I now realise that my parents limited education and need for absolutes as well as the run in with the vicar made them prime targets.

The Last Choice
by cameo-d inif you had to choose between wearing a magic dog collar that would allow you to live forever, or dying a natural death and perhaps having a hope of resurrection, what would you choose?.
here is the story.
please humor me and read before answering.. suppose you were told that all disease is caused by an electromagnetic imbalance.

That rings a bell...but then lots of witnesses found "truth parallels" in Star Trek....many were sure it was written by a brother incognito.

Pioneered in Stanmore, Harrow in UK. Very high income area, many jewish people, Roger Moore had a house there at one time. Was invited in by a jewish lady who would not let me say who I was (I did try!). When she sat down in her chair and asked what I wanted I explained I was a Jw. She stood up and showed me to the door and said Goodbye. Very embarassing (I was 19 and green).
One educated wealthy woman was very insulting to my west indian sister friend, told us they had been teaching the bible while my friends relatives were still swinging in the trees! Harrow was a very uptight place including the congregation.

We have no idea how good this crisis is actually going to be for us all. Greed has fuelled the inflated economy, poisoned our nature and cut out countries and lands that really need to move forward and get a piece of the cake. Well maybe that just might happen now. We can all stop up and think about what we do with this life we have. Do we need huge cars? Do we need every electrical gadget on the market? Do we need out of season vegetables shipped all around the world from developing countries? When we are faced with tightening out belts maybe we should just count our blessings. Try and google a country like Rumania...I have stories to tell from there that are so sad they are not to believed. They have nothing...nothing!
I hope we all learn from this...I have. I have been poor in my life up until I was in my 20s, now I am well off, yet I can never just spend, spend...it is ingrained in me to be careful.
So enjoy your holidays, dont let this crisis take away the future possiblilities...this could bring us together more than we ever could think.

I worked with my husband on renovating Hayes Bridge, we were pioneers with one child and another on the way. My husband would drive from inner London out to Hayesbridge every day after he had done his early morning cleaning and work all day there. I went to look after the children on weekends in a type of creche. I helped stripping the old linoleum of the floors in the naughty boys dormitaries, we were two sisters that did it by hand...it was really hard back breaking work..along comes a brother to take over and supervise us...he lasted about 15mins...we just laughed at him...no stickability...just wanted to look important.
We worked for a year there...I admired my husbands willingness, he worked his butt off there. I remember he couldnt always get there for 8am because of the traffic and leaving his work, one morning a brother on the gate sarcastically asked him who he thought he was coming so late for the morning text and prayer. I think my husband asked him where he was when my husband was earning his families keep at 4am in the morning...shut him up.
Still there were many good experiences from haysbridge..it was before the days of complete control by the Wt so people got away with a lot more and there was a lot of fun on site. The friendships with the lads working there was great..we often had up to six volunteers sleeping in our flat (one in the bath tub!)
I havent been back in Britain for years and havnt visited the place since 1990 so have no idea how it is today...remember creeping around the back lanes to get to the hall so as not to annoy the people living close by.
